The Lies of Locke Lamora

The Lamora boy and his fellow Catchfire orphans entered this kingdom some twenty years after its founding. It was the summer of the Seventy-seventh Year of Gandolo, Father of Opportunities, Lord of Coin and Commerce. Locke Lamora stood in darkness at the center of the Echo Hole, listening to the rush of water down the break in the floor, staring fixedly at the patch of grayness that marked the door to the street.
