Additionally, when someone with depression has lost all hope that their life will ever get better, it can cause them to feel suicidal20 (and in the worst of cases, to act on these feelings). Feeling worthless.2 It can be common for people with depression to hate themselves, to struggle to see how any of their friends or family members could love them, and/or to wholeheartedly believe that everybody they know would be better off without them. If they did struggle with depression, then they are now recovered – which means that if at any point in the future they claim to be feeling depressed, then they must be “faking it,” “making it up,” “looking for attention,” or “just being overdramatic.” And, as a result, if someone with depression talks about wanting to “give up,” it should always be taken extremely seriously rather than being dismissed.
