Braithwaite’s doctoral thesis, Phantasms and Hallucinations, written during this period, takes as its starting point a discussion of Josef Breuer’s 1895 case study of Anna O. He wrote in the answer and began to read out the next clue. He had, moreover, inherited from his father the habit of announcing his presence with his own characteristic sound; in this case, a constant snuffling emitted from his nose. Bizarrely, they stayed in the Buck Inn—the same pub George Braithwaite had visited on the day of his suicide—and it was here that the relationship was finally consummated.
